This narrative portrait represents Tsongkhapa (1357-1419), the founder of the Geluk order, surrounded by scenes describing his life. The great reformer of Tibetan Buddhism is considered an emanation of Manjusri, the" bodhisattva" of Wisdom, and a spiritual ancestor of the Dalai Lama. At left of centre there is a depiction of a mandala.
